JOHN AND ERICA PLATTER
AFRICA UNCORKED is a wonderful collection of colourful stories
and adventures chronicling John and Erica Platter's travels
along some very unusual wine routes. Sniffing, spitting and
swallowing their way through Africa, using vineyards as their
beacons, they've bypassed the usual clichés and carved
out a new trans-continental road.
Their safari took them off the beaten track to 13 very different
wine-growing countries. They made astonishing wine discoveries,
sampled amazing food, met extraordinary characters, visited
fabulous historical sites, and ventured into areas, which have
been no-go zones for foreigners for decades. |

JAMES SEELY
Wine-making in South Africa has a long and fascinating history.
In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the sweet white wines
of Constantia were rated amongst the finest in the world. But
as demand went up, quality went down and the market with it,
so that Constantia became a memory. The growers and shippers
concentrated on fortified wines in imitation of sherry and port.
But now the term 'South African sherry' may no longer be used
in Europe and that trade, too, has vanished. In the recent past,
moreover, South African wines were shunned on account of apartheid.
Now a new political age has arrived and with' it wine-makers
dedicated to quality, bringing out the unique character derived
from the soils and the near perfect climate for grape growing
enjoyed by so many different parts of the country. The choice
is abundant and the wines are excellent. They are now becoming
widely available for the first time, and this book tells the
whole complex and absorbing story, guiding the reader through
a new and exciting range of very high quality wines. |
